eFTI readiness for TMS vendors and logistics platforms

Your existing shipment model is the starting point

Most transport software already holds much of the information that will feed regulatory freight datasets. The first engineering task is therefore not to invent an eFTI database, but to understand which existing fields map cleanly and where data quality or ownership is weak.

That inventory also reveals which information comes from carriers, shippers, drivers, external documents or connected systems.

Avoid making the TMS schema equal to the eFTI schema

A regulatory data model and an operational transport model solve different problems. If the TMS core is reshaped to mirror eFTI one-to-one, later regulatory changes can become product-wide migrations.

A translation layer allows the TMS to keep its own stable business model while producing the data representation required by the eFTI ecosystem.

• Canonical internal shipment model.
• Versioned eFTI mapping layer.
• Validation before submission or exposure.
• Per-tenant configuration where customers differ.
• Status and error events returned to the TMS.

Decide later whether to certify or connect

The EU framework supports certified eFTI platforms and service providers. For many existing software vendors, integrating with a specialised certified layer may be more proportionate than turning the whole TMS into certification-sensitive infrastructure.

A modular architecture preserves both options while the remaining rules mature.

Use 2026 for engineering preparation

The Commission's timeline gives software vendors a useful preparation window before full application in July 2027. That time is best spent on data mapping, APIs, validation, audit events and operational tooling that will remain useful whichever certified route is chosen.
